Manufacturing
Matters to Muskegon
A
SPECIAL EDITION PUBLISHED BY
Manufacturing Matters to Michigan
for Muskegon Manufacturing Week:
May 9-13, 2005
This edition
features essays by Michigan
Manufacturers Association President Mac McIllroy and Muskegon
Area First CEO Jim Edmonson which provide the backdrop for a meaningful
discussion of the state of
manufacturing in Michigan — and Muskegon — today.
Also included
are profiles on five small manufacturers located here in Muskegon County.
While the aforementioned
essays present a macro view of manufacturing, these articles flesh out
a number of the real challenges our locally
owned shops face and how each views its prospects for future growth.
A page
of colorful graphics on page 15 paints the collective financial impact
of Muskegon County’s manufacturers — jobs,
taxes, purchases, donations and more — to our community and to
our state. It presents, conversely, a vibrant reminder of what
Muskegon stands to lose if its manufacturing base is allowed to erode.
Challenging, good-paying
careers in today’s advanced manufacturing environment await young
people who are willing to
prepare themselves. Muskegon’s brand new Career Tech Center, highlighted
on pages 8 and 9, offers a growing number of programs to help students
do just that.

Supplement #1
In this
first publication we are honored to feature essays by not one, but two
highly influential, high profile individuals: Mac MacIllroy, CEO of
the Michigan Manufacturers Association, and Don Jakeway, CEO of the
Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Click
here to view their essays.
This first
publication also features stories on seven area manufacturers - and
a page of financial metrics which shows their combined economic impact.
While each story brings out some common themes, each is also quite unique
- underscoring the fact that manufacturing is not just about turning
out widgets, but about real people: real Michigan people.
